I had been doing such mixed media collages for about a year when the terrorists struck on September 11. New York born and educated, I did not personally visit the site of the destruction of the World Trade Towers. The mixed media material lent itself quite naturally to a portrayal of what I had seen on television, in newspapers and magazines. I wanted to show the destruction in a way that was abstract but still obvious to everyone. I often have friends visit from African countries, and even though they were not exposed to the continual scenes of the disaster that we saw daily for weeks, they immediately know what my collage portrays.
